Sherry Lynn Cook Sabo

Age 59, died January 23, 2011, at Summit View Nursing Home, Lake City, TN, following a long, courageous battle with Pick's Disease. Born in Athens, TN, on September 18, 1951. Preceded in death by parents Robert and Barbara Small Cook; grandparents Henry Lynn and Viola Gregg Small; and May Rothe and John Robert Cook. Sherry graduated Summa Cum Laude from The University of Tennessee (History) in 1973. She served as a legislative assistant in Washington, DC, for Congressman John Duncan, Jr.; as a consultant for the American Petroleum Institute, Washington, DC, and Sun Oil Company, Dallas, Texas; and served as the Corporate Communicator for Rust Engineering, Birmingham, AL. She also worked as a seasonal Park Ranger at the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site, Flat Rock, NC, where she contributed her efforts to the care of the goats. She was a member of St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock where she served as a Jr. Warden. Sherry loved the outdoors and hiked extensively in the Smokey Mountains, Big Bend National Park, and the Pisgah National Forest. She also was an accomplished snow skier and possessed a passionate interest in geology and local history.

Survived by husband Eugene Charles Sabo of Hendersonville, NC; sister Cynthiana Cook Spangler, Knoxville, TN; nieces Rachael Lynn Spangler, Raleigh, NC; Amanda Detweiler and Laurel Derrick of Navarre, OH; brother-in-law C. Daniel Derrick of Navarre, OH; and sister-in-law Marlene Derrick of Navarre, OH.

There will be a memorial service in Athens, TN, in the Spring.

The family has expressed their wish that gestures of sympathy in lieu of flowers be made to The Carl Sandburg National Historic Site, Attn: Connemara Farm Goat Barn, 81 Carl Sandburg Lane, Flat Rock, NC 28731; The Foothills Land Conservancy, 373 Ellis Avenue, Maryville, TN 37804-5824; or Johns Hopkins University, c/o Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 436, Baltimore, MD 21201 with a note indicating the donation is in memory of Sherry Sabo for the Pick's Disease research of Chiadi U. Onyike, M.D.
