Robert L. (Bobby) Hatmaker, age 82, passed away on February 26, 2015. He was born on July 5, 1932 in Coal Creek, Tennessee, the son of Luke and Bess Miller Hatmaker who predecease him. Bobby graduated from Lake City High School in December 1951. While at Lake City he earned All State Honors in football. He turned down several scholarship offers and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on January 22, 1952. He was a Korean War Veteran. He was assigned to the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, which was the successor to the Manhattan Project. He was stationed at Marine Barracks, Clarksville, Tennessee, aka "the birdcage." The Marines at the 'Birdcage" provided security details for the numerous secret weapons systems stored there. Sergeant Hatmaker and his brother Marines would eventually suffer numerous medical issues from their exposure to these weapons systems. After a stint with the Lake City Police Department, he retired from American Bakeries Corporation, known locally as Merita Bread Company. He drove a bread truck and was a member of the Teamsters Union. After retiring from Merita Bread Company, he worked at Apex Office Supply in Oak Ridge and retired a second time at age 80. He was also co-owner of Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lake City.
Bobby liked to say, "I was born and raised in Coal Creek, raised a family in Lake City, and would be buried in Rocky Top, and never leave the city limits."
