Carl Dew

Carl Dew, age 95, of Lake City, Tennessee, passed away Monday, October 31, 2011. Born on August 5, 1916 in Coal Creek, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Charles Wallace Dew and Lee Parks Dew. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eleanor Marie Cooper Dew and their three children, Carolyn Dew Pearre and husband, Courtney Pearre of Nashville; David Carl Dew and wife Rebecka Dew of Lake City; and Edward Charles Dew of New York, NY; four grandchildren, Adrienne Pearre Knestrick and husband Bob Knestrick; and Lee Pearre Patnaik and husband Raj Patnaik of Nashville; Matthew Dew; and Jessica Dew Thompson and husband Kasey Thompson of Knoxville; and five great-grandchildren, Cooper Knestrick, Cole Knestrick, Reed Patnaik and Anna Neil Patnaik of Nashville; and Hadley Marie Thompson of Knoxville. Carl was preceded in death by his brothers Edward Dew and Franklin M. Dew, and his sisters Anna B. Snelson, Geneva Turnbill, and Charlene Dew.

A 1941 graduate of the Louisville College of Pharmacy (University of Kentucky), Carl served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He was the owner/pharmacist of Corner Drug Store in Lake City and was involved in numerous professional, community, business, and church activities during his lifetime. He received the national pharmacy Bowl of Hygeia Award in 1963 for community service and was named Tennessee Pharmacist of the year in 1979. He was president of the Tennessee Pharmacists Association in 1973 and served as chairman of the professional relations chairman for the National Association of Retail Druggists. In 2007, Senator Randy McNally, a fellow pharmacist, recognized Carl on the floor of the Tennessee Senate with a joint resolution to honor and congratulate him on his many years of service as an outstanding pharmacist. He served two terms on the City Council in Lake City and was Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 122 for eight years; he was a past president and 50-year member of the Lake City Lions Club and a 50-year member of Coal Creek Masonic Lodge 492 and the Scottish Rite. The oldest member of First Baptist Church of Lake City, he was a Sunday School teacher for 40 years. In 1995, Carl received the Mayor's Award in recognition of his civic and business leadership in Lake City and in 2009 was inducted into the Anderson County Hall of Fame receiving the award for Lifetime Achievement.
In addition to the family drug store, now managed by his son David, travel and gardening were keen interests for Carl. He and Eleanor traveled extensively visiting countries on five continents. In their motor home they drove across the United States several times. The Savage Garden Wildflower area near Lake City has been a family project since the 1960's.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Morning Pointe Assisted Living Center in Clinton for their care of Carl and Eleanor during these past few years.

Visitation will be 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Saturday, November 5, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Lake City with the funeral to follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mike Jones officiating. Interment will follow funeral at Leach Cemetery in Lake City, TN.
